Every year, MESS hosts two extraordinary Melbourne artists in a residency program supported by City of Melbourne. In 2021, Nina Buchanan and Nick Roux developed new work in whatever ways the pandemic has allowed. This concert saw the residents unveil what they’ve been working on and was followed by a Q&A with the artists, hosted by Robin Fox.

Nina presened a stellar set of electronic sounds. Renowned for her powerful live performances, Nina channels the intensity and euphoria of dance music while shedding its usual linearity, a reflection of her own particular methodology of constructing sounds and arrangements.

Nick Roux performed with the Symbiotic Horn. The Symbiotic Horn, half human half machine, joins direct human expression to machine brutality producing a barrage of complex and fluctuating sonic textures. It’s a two-metre long horn attached to an air compressor, controlled by a hand and a modular synthesiser (must be seen to be believed!). The performance featured Matthias Schack-Arnott on percussion.

MESS Local Residencies are supported by City of Melbourne and MESS Residents Reveal is co-presented with Melbourne Music Week.

Nina Buchanan

Producer and composer Nina Buchanan has carved out a singular space in the local electronic landscape. She creates at the intersection of club music, exploratory synthesis, and composition, building immersive soundscapes that envision spaces of shared vulnerability and collective catharsis, where normative sonic hierarchies are disrupted and mutual care is prioritised.

Renowned for her powerful live performances, Nina channels the intensity and euphoria of dance music while shedding its usual linearity, a reflection of her own particular methodology of constructing sounds and arrangements.

Her debut LP Restless Abandon, evokes genre affiliations as broad as 90s electronica, IDM, generative synthesiser music, and minimalism, as pensive ambient interludes slot among ecstatic, driving tracks.

Nina has played for a wide range of storied institutions across the country, with compositions created for MONA FOMA and Liveworks, quadraphonic work for Liquid Architecture, and performances for The Substation, Asia Topa and the MESS Synthesiser Orchestra at Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
