INHARMONICITY
MESS Artist, New Waveforms – March 2025
INHARMONICITY is the alias of Warrnambool-based artist Shaun Pragt.
By day, Shaun is a qualified piano tuner and technician.
Come night, he swaps out the strings, instead chaining together an array of synthesisers to create inviting and atmospheric soundscapes, grounded in evolving and emotive percussion informed by the deep history of electronic dance music productions.
How did you first get involved with synths and electronic sound?
I began fiddling with electronic music in my teenage years, however only recently fully immersed myself thanks to the South-West MESS program in Warrnambool back in 2022. That was the game changer for me and helped build my confidence to perform in a live context which was absolutely invaluable.
How would you describe the sounds you make today?
Probably a little too close to my influences if I’m honest, but it also depends. I am enjoying experimenting with ambient textures at the moment, and am hopeful that one day I can collate enough material to do something like that live. For now though, I’m firmly in the beat based electronic sphere.
Where do you find inspiration, what motivates you?
There’s a feeling when you accidentally stumble upon a new sound or idea while experimenting which is hard to describe. It’s a real rush of excitement which I am constantly chasing, so I use that as my goal when working on sounds.
What’s been one of the most rewarding or satisfying moments of your journey so far?
Collaborating with One Day Studios and Gus Franklin for the score of the Mable and Switch pilot episode has to be a highlight. Up until that point I had never been involved in film scoring, so learning the processes for that was an interesting and exciting challenge. Seeing it all come together was a real thrill and working with the fantastic crew there has been a dream come true.
And the most challenging?
The most challenging moment would have to be when some of my equipment malfunctioned during a live performance, there’s a lot of gremlins in that setup!
Do you have a current ‘go to’ set up at MESS? Any favourite machines or combos that you’re currently digging?
My favourite would have to be the GRP-A8. It’s an absolute monster and has the sound to match its physical size. The stereo panning feature is also a game changer, you can get bizarre and wacky sounds from it if you can decipher its unusual routing!
Are there any machines in the MESS collection you’ve had your eye on but haven’t tried yet?
I’ve been meaning to give the Erica Synths Techno System a spin for a while, that will definitely be my next booking when I travel to Melbourne!
If you could give yourself one piece of advice when you first started what would it be?
