Performing Electronic Music: In Conversation with Passepartout Duo

Sunday May 4, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
$5.00 โ€“ $10.00

One of the great challenges of performing electronic music is that the vibrating part of the instrument is the PA system. So without immediate proprioceptive feedback, how can the performance of electronic music be truly tactile?

This question has preoccupied instrument designers from Theremin and Don Buchla toโ€ฆ.wellโ€ฆ.international magicians of electronic musical instrument and interface design Passepartout Duo (Nicoletta Favari & Christopher Salvito). Join us at the Meat Market for the first in our MESS in Conversation series where MESS co-founder (and long time dabbler in problems of electronic music performance) Robin Fox hosts an in depth discussion with these extraordinary artists including a deep dive on the amazing Chromaplane designed by the pair in collaboration with KOMA Elektronik.

About Passepartout Duo

Reassessing the tools they use to create their music, the musicians of Passepartout Duo are continually developing a specialised and evolving ecosystem of handmade musical instruments. Their philosophy looks at these instruments not as inanimate objects but as agents that contribute to the creative process in fundamental ways, and their design can be inspired by things as disparate as baobab flowers from Madagascar or popular music traditions in the Basques. An overview will be given on their experimentations with synthesisers and circuits, and possible parallelism with the human voice.
