Description
The A-100 system is the reason Doepfer is known as the father of Eurorack. Released in 1995, it was designed as an affordable version of modular synthesiser system, and repurposed some circuits from the MS-404, Doepfer’s earlier TB-303 emulator. Döpfer also published the specifications on his website, and a new modular synth standard was born. Other companies had made 3U modules before, notably Paia in the 60s and Blacet in the 70s, and Analogue Systems were coincidentally designing a 3U modular system at the same time as the A100, but the open source designs and affordability of the A-100 paved a clear path for future modular synth designers to follow, and ultimately led to an explosion of independent module designs across the world which could be linked together. Döpfer learned much about modular synthesis design when he restored a vintage Moog modular system, and the clarity of his approach shares much with Moog. The Monster system combines modules from the original A-100 system and later Doepfer module releases in the A-100 series.
