Stephen Levitin aka Apple Juice Kid is an American music producer, DJ and drummer who has produced beats for the likes of Mos Def, Azealia Banks, Wale and Camp Lo. He also co-founded the Beat Making Lab: an Emmy award-winning web series that teaches Hip Hop and Electronic music production for the purposes of social change. Now, Levitin brings his extraordinary skills to MESS for this Beat Making workshop, which will include:

  • Making infectious beats and rhythms in Reason, which you can incorporate into other DAWs like Ableton and Garageband;

  • The art of sampling and making custom drum sounds;

  • Entrepreneurship with beat making – how to get placements with major artists, music on TV, film, commercials.

Beginners are welcome – this workshop is suitable for all skill levels, no prior experience is necessary.

What to bring:

  • Participants can bring their own computers or flash drive of beats if they have some to play for a collective ‘beat critique’

  • Something to write/type notes

  • Tea and coffee will be provided, but please bring your own water bottle


About Apple Juice Kid
Stephen Levitin aka Apple Juice Kid is a music producer, DJ and drummer. Levitin co-founded the Beat Making Lab, an Emmy award-winning PBS web series that teaches Hip Hop and electronic music production for the purposes of social change. The Lab began in the Music Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has travelled around the world from Congo (DRC) to Fiji and most recently to Haiti with the support of Apple.

Apple Juice Kid has produced music for artists such as Mos Def, Azealia Banks, Camp Lo, Wale, Jessica Mauboy and MC Lyte. He has released several Jazz remix albums with a Global following including the critically acclaimed Miles Davis Remixed, an EP release on Ultra records, VP Records and productions with Grammy-nominated singers Nnenna Freelon, Yahzarah and Carolyn Malachi.

Deepak Chopra has interviewed Stephen for his show One World and he has appeared in media including The Wall St Journal, VICE, MTV, Pitchfork, NPR, Huffington Post.
