Oscilloscopes allow us to look at the waveforms that travel through the air as energy to our ears and manifest as sounds in our brains. They are used for multiple purposes from ensuring phase alignment in studios to the aesthetic visualisation of music. Many artists have worked with oscilloscopes to create audio visual films. Of note are the early visual music compositions of experimental film maker Mary Ellen Bute and the ‘Oscillon’ images of Ben Laposky. More recent exponents are MESS co-founder Robin Fox who released the DVD Backscatter in 2004. Fox’s audio-visual oscilloscope works led directly into his more widely known work with lasers and sound.
