Every year MESS hosts two extraordinary Melbourne artists in our local residency program supported by the City of Melbourne.
In 2020/21, Naretha Williams and R. Rebeiro each spent time developing new sounds using the MESS collection as a springboard to launch into the creation of new works. Both performed stellar sets at the recent MESS at the Bowl event.
The Residents Reveal Artist Talk event is a forum for these artists to discuss what they have been working on, what’s important to them, where they have been musically and where they are going. Facilitated by MESS co-founder Robin Fox participants were invited into a conversation with Naretha and Rohan, ranging across topics from the personal to the technical and everything in between.
These events are an incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with amazing artists and hear about their processes.

Naretha Williams is a composer, sonic dramaturg and experimental artist. A First Nations Wiradjuri woman of mixed lineage, born and based in Melbourne on the Sovereign Land of the Kulin Nation, Victoria AUS. Naretha's process based work intersects installation and contemporary music, exploring themes around identity, place and the unseen. Ritual and esoteric practice features throughout her signature works as well as methodology utilising DNA sequencing. Naretha's diverse musical interests span narrative score through to contemporary electronic music and she is engaged across the sector as a sound designer and composer, often working in contemporary dance and theatre. She is the 2019 winner of the Music Victoria Award for Best Experimental or Avant-garde Act and released her first LP Record BLAK MASS on Heavy Machinery Records in 2020.

R. Rebeiro (My Disco/Downwards) is a musician from Melbourne, Australia. As a solo electronic musician R. Rebeiro explores probability as an artistic methodology to enact rhythmic expression. Combining analogue grit and digital precision by the use of manipulated drum machines and Max/MSP, R. Rebeiro exemplifies a musical practice that is simultaneously improvisational and compositional. Generative sound sequencing systems are implemented with each performance displaying a unique and infinite variety of combinations. R. Rebeiro uses rhythm as a temporal art form to explore ideas around cause and effect, variation, acceptance and deep listening.
