In 1995 German synth manufacturer Doepfer released the A-100 modular analogue synthesiser system. Starting out with only 10 types of modules available this small, portable format, commonly referred to as Eurorack, is now the preeminent platform for contemporary modular synthesis. It has expanded to encompass dozens of manufacturers producing many thousands of unique modules, and continues to grow at a rapid pace. Keith Fullerton-Whitman’s career as an artist has paralleled this development. Along with many other creative projects, Keith has been personally involved with the development of Eurorack from both a creative and conceptual perspective. Keith will take you through the thinking and methodology behind using Eurorack modules from his own original A-100 system (currently in the MESS collection), to the large and ever growing “History of Eurorack Modular” project residing at MESS, undertaken by Melbourne artist Wally De Backer.
