Did you know that the Buchla 200e is one of the most popular instrument at MESS? Buchla redefined the boundaries of electronic sound and epitomised the West Coast approach to synthesis, and playing his instruments can feel both completely intuitive or totally alienating!

Our next Synth Cafe will be a deep dive into Buchla, a look at East vs West coast synthesis, and a bit of a listening party! We’ll be joined by artist Nina Buchanan, who recently returned from an artist residency at EMS Stockholm, take us through the ins and outs of the Buchla instruments at MESS, as well as some of the other modular gear it inspired.

About Nina

Nina Buchanan is a musician and composer whose practice encompasses performing and releasing electronic music, sound installation, scores and sound design. Working predominantly with electronic sound and keyboard instruments, her music creates rich emotional landscapes, oscillating between the ecstatic and the melancholic.

Renowned for her powerful live performances, Nina channels the intensity and euphoria of dance music while shedding its usual linearity, a reflection of her own particular methodology of constructing sounds and arrangements.

Nina has released two EPs and an album, Restless Abandon (2021), with performances for Melbourne Music Week, The Substation, Asia Topa, Liquid Architecture and Carriageworks, and composition work featured at festivals nationally and internationally.

What is Synth Cafe? ☕

Synth Cafe is our monthly event series, especially for MESS Members. Designed to foster community and deepen your connection with electronic sound, these Saturday morning gatherings will offer a relaxed setting where you can grab a coffee and get to know other people in the community. Events will be centered around a unique blend of activities, whether it's an artist talk, an in-depth demo of a groundbreaking new instrument, hands-on workshops, or a deep dive into particular treasures from the MESS collection.

We’re looking forward to making your weekends resonate with the art and science of sound and friends!

If you have any suggestions for things to do at Synth Cafe, please contact our Membership and Engagement Coordinator, Prudence Rees-Lee: prudence@mess.foundation
